You Can Fully Relax with Sedation Dentistry
Many patients avoid going to the dentist because of fear of pain or sensitivity. At Designing Smiles in Hackensack, NJ, we want you to receive the dental care need without worry about anxiety or discomfort. Dr. Judith Mamah practices gentle dental care and provides a range of sedation dentistry options to help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile in complete comfort. Our caring dental team is dedicated to providing a stress-free experience.
Sedation Enables Vital Care
It is very important to receive regular dental care and treatment. Routine exams and cleanings are effective ways to prevent oral health issues. However, patients who have had negative experiences in the past, who fear dental instruments or procedures, or who are hesitant to undergo extensive dental work, may put off receiving the essential care they need. Avoiding receiving timely treatment can lead to extensive decay, infection, and eventual tooth loss.
Proven sedation methods can help all patients to receive vital treatment. Even if you have avoided the dentist for years or require more extensive procedures, our advanced options can help you undergo any procedure without discomfort. Sedation can also help patients to undergo multiple procedures at one time, limiting the need for future visits and lowering your stress and overall cos.
Our Sedation Options
Designing Smiles offers two safe, effective sedation dentistry options in addition to local anesthesia: nitrous oxide and oral sedation. We offer these options for any dental procedure that might cause anxiety, as well as for procedures requiring pain relief.
Nitrous oxide gas is a very mild sedative, and is safe to use for patients of all ages. This colorless gas is inhaled through a comfortable facial mask during treatment, and the dosage is controlled by Dr. Mamah to suit your individual needs. Nitrous oxide will not interfere with your ability to breathe normally, nor cause a gagging reflex. In fact, it works to prevent this reflex in sensitive patients.
As a gentle sedative, nitrous oxide inhibits pain and promotes a calm, relaxed feeling. You remain conscious throughout treatment and are able to communicate, as needed. The gas takes effect very quickly, and wears off just as quickly, so you will leave the office feeling alert and able to return to daily tasks.
Oral sedation provides a deep level of relaxation, which some patients prefer during dental treatment. With this method, Dr. Mamah provides you with a prescription for medication to take at home before your appointment. During treatment, you will remain conscious, but can feel very calm and relaxed, even if extensive dental work is needed.
Dr. Mamah, Dr. Allison Jang, and our entire staff practice gentle dentistry in a soothing office environment. Rest assured, we will do all we can to provide you with a pleasant dental appointment.
There are several types of medication available for oral sedation, some of which also work to reduce your memory of your dental procedure. Patients who are very fearful or have dental phobia may benefit from this option. The pills will make you feel slightly drowsy, so you will need to arrange for transportation to and from your dental appointment.
